Today I arrived in the “Steel City”. It is interesting to ride through outskirts with all the old buildings of a once thriving industry.
I also rode through what they call a color park. It looks like it is just wide open for graffiti. It is actually pretty cool. Some people think I am crazy but I kind of enjoy cycling in an urban environment.
Yesterday,I met Max from Austria. He started in D.C. and is riding to Calgary to see some friends. Interestingly, it is a shorter trip going to Calgary than going to the West Coast. He is 67 years old. He has camped every night except one. He seems less sure of his route than I am of mine. He just kind of keeps moving forward. He is living basically on dried sausage and similar.
He just rides until he is done. If he can’t find a campground, he would just pull over and camp. He is a more experienced traveler having also done some major hikes in Europe.
I just can’t function like that which brings me to today. Today at about the 25 mile mark I decided that I was just totally exhausted and didn’t want to deal with the logistics any longer. That has been the hardest part. I knew when I started this trip that it would be the most difficult aspect. It is only going to get more difficult as I leave Pittsburgh.
Going forward from Pittsburgh will be like crossing the Rubicon, so as politicians put it, I have decided to “suspend” my journey. I will head back home tomorrow and regroup.

Kim, I really admire you for all that you have accomplished already! Important to listen to body and mind!
Kim, well done in what sounds like horrible conditions. Nice that you met some fellow travellers on the road. Best wishes from England x
I’m so glad you’re listening to your body. That’s most important. Proud of what you’ve done and looking forward to having you back safely.
